Frequently Asked Questions
When working with a speech therapist, many people have questions. We’ve compiled an FAQ for your convenience.
“My child was evaluated but not picked up for speech therapy services by his school/preschool/Early Intervention. Could he still qualify for private speech therapy?”
Yes, in fact many of the clients we have helped have been in this situation: they did not meet the criteria for early intervention or school services, but clearly had speech-language delays or speech sound errors that prevented them from communicating effectively. Private speech therapy is an excellent alternative, especially since your child receives one on one sessions, and we provide parent education to help your child “carry over” skills and ideally make progress faster.
“I am an adult, but I have difficulty with my speech; is it too late to try speech therapy?”
Not at all! We have helped many adults who have difficulty articulating certain sounds (such as R or S), who stutter, or who have difficulty retrieving words due to a neurological event. In our experience, adults often do very well in speech therapy because they are motivated, and mature enough to commit to practice between sessions in order to progress more rapidly.
“Do you accept my health insurance?”
We are an in-network provider for CDPHP and traditional Medicare (managed Medicare plans excluded). We are an out of network provider for insurance companies, which means that you pay our full rate at the time of service, and then you submit documentation to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please check with your insurance company to determine whether speech therapy is covered, and which exclusions may apply. Also, if you wish to use your health insurance for reimbursement, be aware that you may need a prescription for speech therapy from your physician or pediatrician prior to beginning speech therapy services.
“If I am not using my health insurance, what is the process for payment?”
Payment is due at the time of service and billed via Square, or you may purchase a “package” of sessions in advance. Please contact us directly to inquire about current rates.
“How do I get started with speech therapy?”
Start by contacting Cogito Speech Therapy via the contact form on the website, via email at chandra@cogitospeech.com, or via phone at 518-417-1786. We will start by having a brief phone consultation to learn more about your needs, and then you will be sent intake paperwork and set up your Square billing. Then you’ll be ready to schedule your first session (evaluation).
“Do you have a cancellation policy?”
In order for you or your child to make progress, it is necessary to participate in scheduled sessions. However, if cancellation is unavoidable, you must cancel within 24 hours of your scheduled time in order to avoid being billed for your session.
“How long are sessions?”
Sessions are 30 minutes in length.
